2021 EVENT NEWS: GETTING BACK TO THE FUTURE

In the second week of February 2020, continuous improvement for most organizations became dis-continuous. Scarce resources were necessarily re-directed to employee safety and business survival, leaving many an improvement project in limbo. Now, after many months of short-term adaptive actions, there is optimism that most of us can get back to work in 2021. But will the work be the same as pre-Covid? What have we learned in months of hardship that can inform a brighter, more productive future? What previously ingrained systems have we modified during the pandemic in order to be more flexible and responsive? How much more significant has input from “frontline workers” become? And what changes should we expect in the global supply chain?
The extreme stresses that have been placed up on every organization in 2020 have also created surprising new opportunities for some, ranging from streamlined processes to expanded market presence to better tools for employee development and training to more robust platforms for interpersonal connection. On the human side, physical distancing has accentuated the need for collaboration and emotional support for all employees. Geographically dispersed organizations are developing more shared understanding. Physical barriers have necessitated virtual gateways for observation and feedback.
However, none of these lessons will necessarily survive the vaccine. Without a serious effort to wring out the best lessons we have learned, “back to work” may just mean reverting to pre-Covid practices and beliefs that would be better left in the past. This is why GBMP has selected its theme for 2021 Northeast LEAN Conference, “Getting Back to the Future.” Back to focusing on people, back to strategic thinking and back to an innovative workplace inspired by lessons learned from the coronavirus.
